What is Sports and Remedial Massage
Sports Injuries or Remedial Massage is not only for people who do sports. It is for anyone who has had an injury, is in chronic pain, after surgery or tight areas that need to be addressed. This is a great way to help get things moving, yet if you really want to understand what this type of treatment is then let's get a bit deeper into what is actually happening when you have this type of treatment.
Sports and Remedial Massage has actually been around since the Greeks and Romans found that the use of Sports Massage was beneficial to their injured Gladiators! Yet it wasn't until in 1924 at the Olympic games in Paris, that Paavo Nurmi “the flying Finn” from Finland brought his own personal massage therapist whilst competing in running competitions and with treatment between events was able to win an impressive 5 gold medals in one day.. He credited special massage treatment as one of the most important factors of his training program contributing to his success. After this time it has been a treatment that has been incorporated into most athletes training routines. Over time Sports Massage has also been used for not only sports people but also in rehabilitation after surgeries or injuries to help increase movement, help with scar tissue formation, mobility of joints and strengthening of muscles. Sports Injuries and Remedial Massage are different from deep tissue or Swedish massage in that they are more focused treatments. These treatments look at how you are moving, imbalances that may be present in muscles, posture, daily patterns that may be affecting the area that is in pain or discomfort. In this treatment some of the techniques that may be used are myofascial release, reciprocal inhibition, trigger point release and joint mobilisations. Every person is individual so each treatment will be tailored to what that person needs on that day, and as you get better the treatments will change and adapt to what you need. With this type of treatment to really get the most out of it there are normally exercises or little homework assignments to help increase the healing and introduce better habits. Doing this helps to prevent things from happening again or reduce the chance of more injuries.
